Additionally, in the UK, postings are also normalised to the SOC 2020 occupation taxonomy at full, 4 digit, granularity.
When requesting data at an occupation level, you may choose which taxonomy you wish to work with by way of the `occupation_taxonomy_id` parameter supported by applicable endpoints.
## Which taxonomy to use?
Generally, we recommend working with Adzuna Job Titles, unless your reporting needs dictate that you use a standardised "government" taxonomy. Adzuna Job Titles are more repesentative of real world job titles and allow for more granular classification.
## Occupation sectors (categories)
Alongside job title normalisation, all postings are also normalised to one of thirty proprietary occupation sectors, or categories. These occupation sectors represent the type of role being posted at a very broad level, for example, "IT Jobs" or "Healthcare & Nursing Jobs".

The Adzuna Skill taxonomy comprises 22.5k occupational skills, soft skills and certifications. Additionally, these 22.5k skills are grouped into over 400 skill groups, based on a tagging structure.
Traditional skill taxonomies often rely on a hierarchical structure, where each skill is pigeonholed into a single category. While this approach offers simplicity, it fails to reflect the multi-dimensional nature of modern job roles and skills. In contrast, our new tagging approach allows skills to belong to multiple groups, offering a more nuanced and versatile classification.
For instance, a skill like “data analysis” can be relevant to fields such as data science, market research, and business intelligence. Instead of being confined to one category, it now belongs to all relevant skill groups, providing a more holistic view of its applicability across various domains.
Compared to skill hierarchies offered by other LMI suppliers, our approach offers numerous advantages:
Enhanced Flexibility
Our tagging system allows for a more flexible and adaptive classification of skills. Users can now explore how a single skill fits into different contexts, industries, and roles, providing deeper insights into the job market.Comprehensive Market Analysis
By analysing skills across multiple groups, users can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the demand for specific competencies. This multi-faceted view enables more accurate predictions and strategic planning.Improved Job Matching
For employers and recruiters, the ability to see how skills overlap across different groups can improve job matching and talent acquisition strategies. It allows for the identification of candidates with versatile skill sets that might otherwise be overlooked in a traditional hierarchical system.Dynamic Skill Tracking
As the job market evolves, so do the skills required. Our tagging approach makes it easier to update and reclassify skills, ensuring that our analytics remain current and relevant.

Note that when the posting is from a recruiter or staffing agency, and the end employer is not provided, we do not normalise the employer.
While such postings are still included in our data, they will not be included in employer or industry breakdowns.

Similarly, if a posting is requesting an apprenticeship as a qualification for the position, we normalise the requested type of apprenticeship and, where applicable, normalise the requested apprenticeship to the standard education framework for the country of the posting.
